Black and White with a Splash of Colour

Now for some simple photo manipulation. In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to convert your photos to black and white and add coloured elements.

Before
After

1. Open the photo you want to work on in Photoshop.

2. Press ctrl+j (cmd+j on a mac) to duplicate your photo on to a second layer.

3. Convert the duplicated layer to black and white.

4. Make a selection of the element / elements that you want to be in colour using the
lasso tool.

5. Press ctrl+shift+i (cmd+shift+i on a mac) to inverse your selection, then press
the add layer mask button. This will mask off everything in your photo apart from the
elements you wanted to remain bright and colourful.

That's you finished but you can always tweak or fine tune the result by adding to or subtracting from the layer mask.
